Make My Mess My Message

What I believe about building, and why I do it in the open.

Most founder stories are lies of omission.

The polished version skips the nights you could not sleep, the hire you got wrong, the bet that nearly took the whole thing down. It hands you the highlight reel and calls it a map. A young builder holds that map against their own messy reality, decides they do not have what it takes, and quits.

That is the quiet cost of the hero story. The world needs more entrepreneurs, and the myths we tell about them are holding them back.

So I do the opposite. I show the mess.

Build in the open

I have spent thirty years building B2B businesses. Some worked. Some broke. I learned the most from the ones that broke, and almost none of it was written down anywhere I could have found it when I needed it.

I decided to change that for the people coming up behind me. I call it Open Source Business Building. Build in the open. Share what you learn, the wins and the scars both. Give away the playbook instead of guarding it.

It costs me nothing to hand you the lesson that cost me a fortune. It might save you the same fortune. That trade is the whole idea.

Wealth is four things, not one

We are taught the prize is money. That is a quarter of the truth.

The real wealth of a building life is four currencies: capital, wisdom, opportunity, and network. All four compound, and all four compound harder when they move than when they sit. On one condition. They have to be aimed. At people who earned a share of it, or who are building something worth backing. Money included, and that is the part most people leave out.

A business that only ever produced money would be a poor business. I would rather run one that distributes all four.

How I build: the Camel, not the Unicorn

The fashionable way to build is the Unicorn. Raise money you have not earned, burn it chasing growth you cannot keep, sell before the music stops.

I build the Camel. Self-financed, profitable, hard to kill. It carries its own water. It crosses the desert that drowns the Unicorn. It answers to its customers and its people, not to someone who wants out by Friday.

The Camel is patient on purpose, and patience is the rarest thing in a market addicted to the next quarter.

People over boxes

For years my trade sold boxes. Brands, features, product moved one unit at a time.

I never believed it. A product does not solve a problem. A person who has solved that problem a hundred times does. Technology is the tool. People are the craft. Trust is the whole game.

Walk into a home built the right way and you do not see the technology. You feel it. The light is right, the room is quiet, the music has no visible source. The best work disappears and leaves only the experience. You cannot ship that in a box. You build it with people you trust.

Be water

I live where I do because of the wind. Sailing taught me how this actually works.

You do not fight the sea. You read it, set your course, trim for the conditions, and hold the horizon when the water turns rough. You stay formless enough to take what comes and keep moving anyway. Be water. It is the same on land: the plan bends, the direction holds.

This is me, writing it down

So I put it in the open, one week at a time, mess included. The good calls and the expensive mistakes, told honestly enough to be useful on a Monday morning. That is Open Source Business Building in practice, and I call it Make My Mess My Message.

If you came for the polished founder story, this is not it. If you came to build something that lasts, and to hand the next person a better map than the one you were given, pull up a chair.

Make your mess your message. Pay it forward.

Do or do not. There is no try.
